Thanks to the Alabama Department of Education, Oak Mountain was awarded a Learn and Serve grant to work with the students on the concept of Service Learning.
In the past six months, OMMS students with teacher and volunteer help from the school and community, have planted a large garden, built and maintained coldframes and will have a greenhouse installed soon.
The Alabama Urban Forestry Association, with the support of the Alabama Green Industry Training Center, has helped with instruction and donated materials.
This fall the students will plant a large amount of tree seedlings to grow out for Habitat for Humanity homes and other charitable uses.
